Air Force Academy Cadet graduates

Lorinda M. Risdon, a 2004 graduate of Dexter High School, graduated from the U. S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force on May 28, 2008.

She majored in Political Science, earning placement on the Dean's List and Commandant's List six of eight semesters.

After a short leave period, she will report to Intelligence School at Goodfellow AFB, Texas. Second Lt. Risdon is the daughter of Tom and Phyllis Risdon of Dexter Township.

Amanda Pettit of Dexter has been awarded the top student in the major award from Grand Valley State University. Pettit is a graduate of Dexter High School and is the daughter of Jill Plumley and Joseph Pettit.

Pettit received the undergraduate award from the sociology department. At the undergraduate level, candidates for departmental honors must have earned at least 85 credits with an average GPA of 3.5 or above. One student per department earns this award.

Kathryn Cohen of Chelsea received both the Presidential Scholarship and the Ent and Imler Accounting Scholarship in honor of Paul W. Parkinson from Ball State University. BSU Presidential Scholarships are presented each year to top-ability incoming freshmen. The Ent and Imler Accounting Scholarship was created in honor of Paul W. Parkinson to recruit or retain high ability accounting undergraduate and graduate students. Cohen will attend Ball State in the fall and plans to major in pre-business. She is the daughter of Jeffery and Renee Cohen.

Justin Esch of Chelsea and Adam Hunt of Dexter were on the Dean's List for the spring term 2008 at Northwood University. To achieve Dean's List recognition, students must earn a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Margaret Walch of Grass Lake has made the Dean's List at Kettering University for the winter 2008 semester. Walch is pursuing a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree.

Marie Angelocci, daughter of Bradley and Roxanne Angelocci of Chelsea, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Finance from Michigan State University in May 2008. Angelocci was also named to the Dean's List for the 2008 spring semester. She is a 2004 graduate of Chelsea High School.

Central Michigan University's spring 2008 semester honors list includes from Chelsea: Nicole Collins, Kathy Fredette, Brittany Hansen, Evan Mathis, and Daniel Phillips. From Dexter includes: Heidi Clements, Elizabeth Germain and Peter Lawrence.

Tezra Jennings of Dexter graduated summa cum laude from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree. Jennings was also nominated for the Civic Engagement Woman of the Year Award.

Nathan Schwarze, son of Carl and Priscilla Schwarze of Chelsea, received high honors for the spring 2008 semester at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Zachary W. Christman, a 2002 graduate of Chelsea High School, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Christman received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Emily Harris of Chelsea received a $1,000 Community Involvement Award scholarship, sponsored by American 1.

The credit union opened its first Washtenaw branch at Polly's Country Market in Chelsea in December, and Harris is the first Chelsea High School graduate to win the award.

Applications were taken in February and the scholarship committee decided the winners in April.

Harris was highly involved in both extracurricular activities and the community while in high school.

She wrote a 2,500-word-or-less essay on the benefits of altruism and how she improved their community through service.

American 1 has rewarded deserving and community-minded high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships since 2000. The credit union awarded 10 high school seniors with the award this year to students in the communities it serves.
