Minzey, who was making a bid to run for his third term, was unseated in Tuesday's primary election by retired first lieutenant Jerry Clayton who won the Democratic nod and will face Dwayne Taylor, the lone Republican in the primary, in the November general election.
Clayton, of Ypsilanti Township, over 54 percent of the vote (16,245 votes), while Minzey just under 40 percent (11,910), in a tight race according to unofficial results posted by the Washtenaw County Clerk's Office Tuesday night.
A veteran of the sheriff's department with more than 20 years experience, Clayton said the residents of Washtenaw County agreed with his message that change was needed in the sheriff's department and they showed that on Tuesday.
"I think that we were able to get across our message to the people," Clayton said. "We need to get back to engaging the community, developing partnerships with various neighborhood groups, and I think the people saw that something needed to change."
Clayton said he hopes to instill the kind of leadership that he learned serving a number of different positions within the sheriff's office from working as a corrections officer, deputy sheriff, shift sergeant and finally first lieutenant, retiring in 2006.
