When artists become famous there is always a group of people to claim they saw them before they made the big time. Of course, if everyone who claimed this was telling the truth, the person would have become famous overnight.

Here is a chance to see someone with the potential to become famous before she does. Alexandra Sly, 17, from Brighton Township will perform in concert at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Dexter United Methodist Church, 7643 Huron River Drive in Dexter. Admission is free.
Alexandra is the daughter of Dexter native Dan Sly and his wife Wendy. She also is the granddaughter of Dexter's Bob and Elsi Sly.
The oldest of nine children, Alexandra began taking piano lessons from her grandmother Elsi when she was only 4 years old and performed last year at both Dexter United Methodist Church and Berean Baptist Church in Livonia.
Her sweet voice goes perfectly with her magical fingers that dance up and down the ivories with style and grace. It's easy to see why music is more than a hobby for Alexandra, who plans to transfer to Eastern Michigan University to study music after she takes some basic college courses this fall at Schoolcraft College.
"I have been taking lessons from my grandmother ever since I can remember and she has taught me so much," Alexandra says. "Last year I started taking lessons from Joseph Gurt, a former music professor at Eastern Michigan. It was a very good experience for me and helped me grow."
Alexandra, who is back taking lessons from her grandmother, will perform a variety of music on Aug. 17 at DUMC.
"I will play for about 45 minutes to an hour and play some classical, jazz and contemporary music."
Most of the songs will be performed on piano, but one of the newer songs will be played on guitar.
"I will be playing a song I wrote on guitar," says Alexandra, who is a recent high school graduate. "The song is called, 'There is Life' and it's something I wrote a few months ago. It's more of a Christian song."
Like she did last year, Alexandra is recording the songs she will play on Aug. 17 and will have copies of the CD available before and after the show.
