Donald E. P Smith
Chelsea
Donald E. P Smith died July 30 at home. He was 83.
Don was a Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Michigan. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., the youngest son of George and Mary Smith. After serving in World War II in the Psychological Warfare Unit of the 28th Infantry Division, he earned his B.A. at the University of Rochester, and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Cornell University. He came to Ann Arbor in 1952 to teach at the University of Michigan School of Education. He was Director of the Reading Improvement Service from 1952 to 1970.
His publications include "The Nature of Reading Disability," "Child Management" and "A Technology of Reading and Writing" (with his wife Judith), "Anger Management" (with Carl Semmelroth) and many articles and instructional materials in the area=2 0of literacy. He was a gifted teacher and mentor to his countless graduate students.
Shortly after retiring in 1990, he suffered a massive stroke, but confounded the doctors by recovering over the next few years. He focused on recovering his prowess in golf, and finally achieved a 37 on nine holes in 1994. He was a regular at the Chelsea Big Boy, where he especially appreciated the coffee, thin pancakes and pecan rolls.
In 1964 he married Judith Meyer, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Sandra of Berkeley, Calif., Julia (Jason Larke) of Saline, Zachary (Barbara) of Fredericksburg, Va., Kimberly of Northfield, Minn. and Joshua (Cherie Benoit) of Barre, Mass. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Lynn. His amazing grandchildren include Christopher Martiniak, Jacoby and Davison Smith, Liralyn Smith, and Cedulie, Remy and Vivienne Benoit-Smith. Also grieving his death are his sister-in-law-golf partner Sue Meyer, nephew Gordon Mercado, cousins-in-law Jean and Dave Wolter, and too many more to mention.
Cremation has taken place, and friends and family gathered at the Smith home, 2 - 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, to reminisce and celebrate Don's life. Memorial contributions can be made to Arbor Hospice or to the Reading Recovery Council of North America. Arrangements are by the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.
Paul Curtis Chaffee
Formerly of Dexter
Paul Curtis Chaffee of Williamston, Mich., formerly of Dexter, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Riverwind Senior Assisted Living Residence in Williamston. He was 86.
Mr. Chaffee was born July 22, 1922 in Castorland, N.Y., the son of Harold L. and Martha A. (Zehr) Chaffee.
Paul worked with his wife in dairy and herd testing. He participated in the Mennonite Church and attended Scio Community Church. He was the secretary and treasurer for the Michigan Holstein Association for many years. Paul liked to make maple syrup from his trees.
On Nov. 25, 1948, he married Alta Pauline Miller in Fairview, Mich., and she preceded him in death on Jan. 10, 2005. Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Chaffee of Depot Bay, Ore., Janette (Ronny) McCarter of Fowlerville; three sons, Jonathan Chaffee of Jackson, Timothy (Brenda Raham) Chaffee of Saline, Lawrence (Claudia) Chaffee of Ann Arbor; 7 grandchildren, Michael, Nichole & Robyn Chaffee, Adam & Jacob Chaffee, and Kyle & Emily McCarter, a sister-in-law, Minnie Chaffee. He was preceded in death by his sister, Clover L. Farrance, and his brother, Lloyd. L. Chaffee.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 4, at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Burial followed at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. The family received friends Sunday, Aug. 3. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the U of M Kellogg Eye Center.
James C. Allen
Harlingen, Texas
James Cramer Allen passed away on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008. He was 62. He was born Dec. 12, 1945 in Harlingen, Texas.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Beck and husband Steve; sons, Kevin Allen and wife Marlene, Brian Allen and wife, Sheryl; companion, Velia Mauricio; sisters, Alice Peters and husband Tommy, Florence Hollembeak and husband, Bucky, Cariel Pacha and husband, Ronny, Ada Hodson, Doris Redner; brothers, Harold Allen and wife, Betty, Curtis Allen and wife, Pam, Larry Allen and wife, Ann; and six grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at Funeraria Del Angel Chapel in Harlingen, Texas.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Chapel. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Funeraria Del Angel, Cemeteries, Mausoleums and a Dignity Memorial Provider, 2906 S. Expressway 77/83, Harlingen, Texas, 78550.
